The BSE Sensex hit a 25-month high before closing 0.4 per cent up on Monday, its fourth straight rise, as earnings optimism and firm global equities boosted sentiments. Financials led the gainers. The 30-share BSE index closed 0.38 per cent or 66.59 points higher at 17,711.35. It rose as much as 17,793.01 points in the day, its highest level since February 2008.Twenty-one of its components advanced. The 50-share NSE index .NSEI gained 0.4 percent to 5,302.85 points. Sustained buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) propelled Indian equities to a two-year high on Monday. FIIs have been steady buyers since the Union Budget was announced on February 26. Domestic institutional investors, in contrast, stayed away from the party. It again was at a two-year high-both on a closing and intra-day basis. Key levels in Nifty are 5345 on the upside while 5260 should act as a good support.
Global Cues:
U.S. stocks rose on Monday as miners and energy companies advanced on dollar weakness and investors bought recent high fliers as the quarter’s end approached. The dollar’s decline boosted commodities prices, including crude oil. Overall volume was light at the start of a holiday-shortened week that will cap the S&P 500’s fourth straight positive quarter. Although the underlying tone was positive, slippage in financial shares, including a 3.3 percent drop by Citigroup, curbed a broader market advance. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 45.50 points, or 0.42 percent, to 10,895.86 — it’s highest close since September2008. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index climbed 6.63 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,173.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 9.23 points, or 0.39 percent, to 2,404.36.Crude oil futures broke a three day losing streak. Crude for May delivery ended up $2.17 at $82.17 a barrel. Gold for June delivery, the most actively traded contract, settled $6.10 higher, or 0.5%, at $1,111.50 an ounce by the close of floor trading in New York.

Stocks gained in strength during the week ended 26 March 2010, extending their winning run to a seventh successive week. The gains, however, were somewhat limited in the week, with a section of investors choosing to book some profits ahead of the reporting season. While the Sensex moved up by around 67 points or 0.38% to 17,645, the Nifty ended at 5283, gaining 21 points or 0.39%. The Sensex has gained close to 2000 points over the past seven weeks, while the Nifty has added around 565 points during that period. Inflow from foreign institutional investors contributed significantly to the market’s sterling performance over the past few weeks. FIIs were net buyers to the tune of over Rs 12,000 crore during the current calendar month. Domestic funds have also been picking up stocks and it is very likely that these two set of investors will continue to remain bullish on India Inc and the Indian economy as well. The recent hike in repo and reverse repo rates did trigger some round of selling in rate sensitive realty, auto and consumer durables stocks last week. But the intensity of selling was not any significantly severe. Stocks found good support at lower levels, to some extent due to short-covering ahead of March series derivatives expiry. Next week, the market will be looking out for sales and shipments figures and automobile and cement manufacturers. Steel companies will reel out their production numbers for March. Bank stocks will take cues from the outcome of the meeting of the finance ministry and Reserve Bank of India officials. The meeting, set to take place on Monday, is for deciding the borrowing schedule for fiscal 2010-2011.By and large, the market is likely to remain sideways for a better part of the coming week, with a few rounds of inspired buying here and there. Still, with the market having run up sharply over the past few weeks, some profit taking is not ruled out altogether. For the coming week we expect Nifty to trade between 5205-5350 levels, with strong support areas at 5175-5150 on the downside and resistance levels at 5350-5425.
Global Cues:
U.S. equity markets had a volatile week due to geopolitical events, but managed to close with modest gains despite afternoon sell-offs on both Thursday and Friday. Sector performance ended mixed. Six posted gains, led by Consumer Discretionary (+2.4%), while four posted declines, led by Energy (-1.9%), which was pressured by a stronger dollar in the latter half of the week. Even though the S&P 500 lost 0.5% on Wednesday, the declines could have been much worse as the dollar soared on geopolitical concerns. It surged higher in morning trade against the other major currencies after Fitch downgraded Portugal’s default ratings and on Greece fears ahead of Thursday’s EU summit. That summit really caused this week’s volatility. Markets resumed their upward move on Thursday morning after German Chancellor Merkel, who had been against a bailout of Greece, said her government would back emergency support that comes from a combination of the IMF and joint bilateral help. Her one stipulation was the aid had to be a last resort. At the same time, the Dubai government unveiled plans to recapitalize its indebted Dubai World conglomerate and repay property unit Nakheel’s bonds in full with $9.5 billion in aid. Markets reversed again Friday morning with equities opening higher and the dollar lower after the EU officially announced the bailout plan overnight. The announcement was the same as the headlines that made the rounds the prior afternoon. Looking ahead to next week, the big event will be the March employment report. Though, it will be released on Good Friday, when the market will be closed for a holiday but the Federal government will be open. Volume next week should be muted due to, a Jewish holiday which begins Monday night, Good Friday which happens to be on Friday, 2nd April which makes it a four day week and means more traders are likely to take it slow or off completely. The last reason the markets could continue their run is based off the Jobs Report due out Friday. It is possible to see continued upside as Wall Street anticipates a extremely positive report with jobs gains. Add that to the light volume, based off multiple holidays and it could be a recipe for higher markets. Gold ended down (0.27%) for the week at $1104.45 while oil ended at $80 down (0.84%) for the week.
